The Federation of Canadian Artists (FCA) is a registered charity founded in 1941 by professional Canadian working artists including Group of Seven luminaries Lawren Harris, Arthur Lismer, and A.Y. Jackson. The first National Executive Council was led by Andre Bieler, and Lawren Harris was the BC region’s first Chairman. Other notable founding members included Emily Carr and the Honorable Mark Kearley.
The FCA continues to operate as a registered charity with members throughout Canada and Chapters in Alberta and B.C.. The FCA is dedicated to raising artistic standards by stimulating participants to greater heights of knowledge and achievement by offering what is believed to be the first completely artists sponsored gallery in Canada.Currently the Federation is the only national-level visual arts organization that manages their own full-time art gallery.
The Federation Gallery is located on Granville Island, in the heart of Vancouver's art and culture community.
One of three chapters on Vancouver Island, Arrowsmith Chapter was formed in 1995 and has since grown to its present roster of over eighty members. These artists represent the visual arts community from Victoria to Quadra Island and all points in between, with many residing in the Parksville/Qualicum area. The Chapter members meet once every two months at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre, where they share ideas, present demonstrations and have group critiques. New members are always welcome.
The Arrowsmith Chapter traditionally holds two juried group shows per year. All of the artwork in these shows, ranging in style from abstract to representational, in different mediums such as watercolour, oil acrylic, mixed media and collage, is rigorously juried by three signature members of FCA. When selecting works for shows, these jurors consider such things as the use of composition, line, colour, perspective, shape, light, proportion and positive and negative space, and mastery of the artist's chosen medium.
Arrowsmith Chapter Juried Shows present an excellent opportunity to enhance or begin a collection of original artwork and appreciate the talent of established and emerging local FCA artists.
The mandate of The Old School House Arts Centre is to foster a vibrant arts centre that promotes and encourages the development of multi-dimensional artists and musicians for the enjoyment of all ages, residents and visitors alike, in Qualicum Beach and throughout central Vancouver Island.
